In assisting with the restoration process ST Biologicals starts with an analysis of your soil. Soil and biological status can be determined using microbial biomass and diversity tests such as PLFA (Phospholipid Fatty Acid Test) and Haney Test.

We focus efforts on three primary areas

Use of Low Dose Fertilizers to Reduce Damage from Excess Nutrient Runoff

Tillage transitioning to cover crops/green manure/companion cropping

  • Introduce a change in the cropping plans on the farm
  • Plant the cover to fit the area of growth based on fallow time frame or cropping needs
  • Choose cover crop seeds to fit a specific planting time frame and weather patterns
  • Minimum of 2 to 4-year implementation plan

It’s important to maintain a living root structure year-round.

 

 

Increasing soil microbiome for a biologically active black soil

  • Review soil test for nutrient balance and walk/dig/smell in the field for soil life
  • Institute a cover cropping, companion cropping or green manure plan on the farm
  • Apply a manure based/compost fertilizer high in humus and nutrient value to the soil
  • Apply needed bacterial and fungal colonies to increase activity
  • Modify tillage practices which destroy the home of the microbiome in your soil and allow for growth as soil texture allows
  • Minimum of a 3 to 5-year implementation plan

Heavy fertilization practices changing to low-dose fertilizers

  • Reduce levels of high salt fertilizer applications to soil either in broadcast or in-furrow forms.
  • Increase use of multiple applications of fertilizers, specifically nitrogen, to growing crops to reduce negative influence on the microbiome with high level applications.
  • Increase use of very efficient forms of foliar fertilizers on crops during the growing season to reduce plant stress and increase nutrient uptake.
  • Plant green manure crops or cover crops to increase organic nutrient uptake and availability from the soil profile.
  • Increase use of manure/compost-based fertilizers, calcium compost material, compost teas, high quality humic/fulvic acid sources.
  • Minimum of 2 to 4-year implementation plan.
